To me the terminology of alpha and beta always just stood for men with leadership qualities and those more suited to follow, never understood why it was so triggering for people.

  That's bullshit. Anyone can exert socially dominant behavior unless you have some sort of illness that's preventing you from it. But not everyone is interested in being like that because of various reason. Besides this, looks are really not that important in a real relationship. It's more important having a healthy lifestyle. All this crap is made by people wanting to feel special and superior to others. Even in other species there's no such thing as alpha. That's just misinformation which the author took back after he realized he made a mistake, but people didn't wanted the truth.
