I get so sick of hearing about Alpha, Beta, and Omega Men on this website. I would like to separate the Myth of the Alpha Male from the Facts about a Social Dominant Male. If you're not sure if you are a dominant male or sub-dominant male just gage your level of anger towards this article. Higher levels of anger will show more delicate levels of social dominant placement/position and a more sensitive ego in general.

Are Alpha Males Real?

Not exactly! alpha males in other species operate differently than what is observed among humans. In dogs and wolves, for example, every member has a place in the hierarchy. In these species, the alphas exert more power. Humans are more complex we belong to more than just one social circle. Science says alpha males likely ruled the common ape ancestor humans shared with chimps 7 million years ago, but that they no longer exist among humans in society today.

Socially Dominant Males.

Socially Dominant Males are real in today's society. These are the men most see as an (alpha) male.

They hold sway with many women, sorry but it's true. Women tend to gravitate to them mainly because of built in instinctual behaviors tied to mating and evolution. Social Dominant Males (alpha) can invoke feelings of inferiority even among other males (beta). Thanks to research, these men may also be more readily identifiable in both visible and invisible ways.

How To Spot a Dominant Male by Behaviors.

Strength. An alpha male is strong. If he doesn’t have brute strength, he has loads of mental strength to think under pressure.

A Leader. An alpha male is always a leader. He doesn’t try to be one, he instinctively takes the lead when the circumstances arrive his way.

Charming. He has a way of words and is appealing to both genders. He is a smooth talker and is charismatic by nature.

Risk taker. What others would call mad recklessness, he calls it his life. An alpha male loves taking risks.

Protective instinct. His protective instinct is always on. He’s alert and aware of what’s going on around him all the time.

Egotism. His ego is unaffected by the opinion of others. He doesn’t care what other people think of him.

Confident. An alpha male doesn’t mind silence in a conversation because he’s not nervous. He’s extremely confident and doesn’t need anyone else’s approval for anything.

Bullheaded. He can be very stubborn when he truly believes in something, even if he’s completely wrong.

He's Got the Look.

Height. Being tall has a range of social benefits: Taller men demonstrate less sensitivity to cues of dominance in other men. In general taller men have more positions of authority in the workforce as well as in social settings.

Voice. Having a deep voice has been referred to as "the Barry White Effect." Studies show that a man's voice communicates much more than spoken words.

Face. A handsome face also advertises a man's dominance as well. A rugged visage is believed to signal optimally elevated levels of T to women in search of high-quality genes they can pass on to their children. The male face has a communicator of dominance in it. The communicator in the male face is so strong it's now even been noticed by scientist and researchers.

Conclusion.

All guys dream of being an (alpha) but, only a few actually have the traits it takes to be one. It takes more than a lesson on life skills to become that guy. It's born into you and a huge part of who you are as a person in general. Thank you Dominant Males for your looks, attitude, and actions, we love you for being Real Men.

I believe in the trait of social dominance/assertiveness but it is not an all-or-none condition. I have many but not all of the signs which you noted.

Strength. I am not a gym rat and I don't have great physical strength but I react well under pressure.
A Leader. I am currently the president of two different organizations.
Charming. Some of the ladies would say that I am.
Risk taker. Definitely not!
Protective instinct. I am usually vigilant and anticipating threats.
Egotism. Yes, I really don't care what others think about me and my positions.
Confident. No, I sometimes lack self-confidence.

Height. No, I am 5' 9".
Voice. I have a baritone voice but I can sing both bass and tenor parts.
Face. The women seem to like it more than I do.

I don't think of myself as a dominant male but I consider myself to be a peacemaker. Others look to me to be a leader but no one is going to call me a dominant alpha male. So I fall in between, closer to a leader.

Most people talk about this stuff as if it is a dichotomy and, usually, it is insecure males who call themselves an "alpha male" to try to boost their own ego. Here is a hint: strongly dominant males have enough confidence that they don't need to go around telling other people just how dominant they are; it is obvious.

Coming from recently stepping up to the role of president in an organization myself, I'd argue that being in that role inherently makes you a risk taker to some degree. Though honestly id rather view myself as a someone who calmly evaluates risks and makes good decisions under pressure than a 'risk taker' by the term itself I understand that reluctance to take on that title. Really just a matter of external terminology versus internal evaluation.

Well your assumption in here says in order to attract women you need to be this most toughest, most dominant, strongest guy. Well this is wrong. If it was like that then we would go extinct. Because there are billions of people out there.

Those qualities are attractive for women yes. BUT most of the time having couple of them is ENOUGH. We don't live in cave times any longer, today's humans are much more complex.

In order to attract women you have to be good enough, you have to have strong men qualities but not all of them, enough of them. Sometimes just a man's voice alone can attract women, sometimes your handsome face or body.

Look at guys like Leo Dicaprio, they are not that strong, dominant, masculine guys but they are confident, good looking dudes and that's enough most of the time.

You don't have to be super, the toughest, most badass dude. This is fake, it's a myth, real world does't world like that.

I agree with some of it but I think there are ways of dealing with one's imperfections whether physical or otherwise - I've met very very short guys I considered alphas cause they had good qualities - I've also met guys who lacked physical power despite being tall and intelligent - and I've met leaders that were introverted and shy - I also do not like men with deep voices - I read men with deep voices are more likely to cheat on their ladies and you could predict a man's likelihood of infidelity with 80% accuracy based on the sound of his rugged and baritone voice - the other thing is I don't like rugged guys - I like guys that look soft and gentle - to me the ideal masculine face is one that is beautiful both by male standards and also by female standards - examples include Al Pacino who is male and looks male but is somewhat soft looking - I do not like pure masculinity without the softness of feminine beauty too - but I'm Asian and people often say that Asian men are too feminine to be sexy - that somewhat 10-15% femininity and 85% masculine face is what I prefer in men.

I think that the whole alpha vs beta thing is really just short-hand for describing the things you're describing here anyway, and I don't think that the terms are actually meant to be taken literally as with the description of wolves. Alpha just means more socially dominant, beta means less socially dominant.

I think also that many people, including myself, see those terms as silly because there are so many deluded idiots who clearly are not actually socially dominant at all, and are actually just complete bellends, who go on about how "alpha" they are.

With these traits you're listing here, I think that what you're actually talking about is just masculinity. Dominance is a masculine trait, and as you mention these traits are influenced by testosterone levels, the male (masculine) hormone. Many studies prove this to be true, a few examples:

Yes it's real you hear about Alpha males all the time, some are on tribal level , some are on national or even international level.

You have to understand that the categories are social and physical attributes and do not measure intelligence what so ever. so in the intelligent world being an Alpha is little important but still significant for breeding.

Best examples of Alphas are Vin Desel, The Rock, etc. If you find someone as popular, successful, inspirational, and in peak physical condition like them. you found an Alpha. they are very popular for being fair, kind, and usually keep their distance from the Omegas (the terrible class), usually Alphas have to do little to no effort to prove themselves in the world. they're commonly rich.

Beta Males and Females are successful in their own ways, most of them are engineers, doctors, and business owners, they have to work to some degree but have attained the same levels of economic and physical attributes as Alphas. they will become the next Alpha after the Alpha of their category falls behind or dies. (See Steve Jobs (former Alpha of technology) VS Elon Musk (current Alpha of technology) for comparison).

It really is a mix of those qualities. Though I would argue a fair number of them are in fact learned skills and mindset that anyone can obtain. You may never have the face of a 'dominant male' (excepting plastic surgery) but you can certainly learn and grow into some of those qualities through life experience and personal development.

I will admit grudgingly that the more of those 'boxes' you 'tick', the more socially dominant a male seems to be. By the same token though, each quality is really its own scale making this whole thing a very complex system and that's not counting the fact that there's easily more qualities and skills not mentioned in this brief myTake.

Yeah probably very true in a way - Nice distinction about only one Alpha male in a pack in the animal kingdom but humans move in a series of interlocking circles so I think there is not one unique socially dominant type, there maybe a different type in circle A and circle B , circle C etc etc - There will also probably will be less dominant males wanting to move in this circles and even there will be likely males who don't want move in any circle.
Females probably have their own social breakdown and are attracted to different circles of males for different reasons. This is a good point and I suspect is true in terms of how we compete against each other for the attention/affirmation from the opposite sex. I've noticed my female friends were not phased by certain males that I had a "problem" with when we are out at say a crowded bar. Same case for females. I can think of numerous times I've been out with a girlfriend and they don't like some other female and I can't understand why as the woman they're bothered by seems perfectly fine to me. In fact, my experience is that females, at least in social groups, seem more competitive with each other than males.

Agreed with the "alpha male" myth, but in your analysis you mentioned such rather irrelevant things as physical height, looks, face... In most cases socially dominant men who most definitely exist are rather short, are not physically attractive as the men whose photos you posted, but their level of confidence in themselves and what they believe in, shrewdness and assertiveness make them attractive. Mind you, they do not have to be smart as most smart people automatically reject dominance as something unnecessary.

Take a look at Churchill who was fat, ugly, short and had a nasty character, but he was most definitely socially dominant man who was able to make many men who were stronger, smarter and better looking feel more submissive to him. I would not generalise. It is like saying all men love big breasts, blond hair and wide thighs. Some do, others don't. Virtually every woman I met told me they did not find muscular body attractive and physical appearance in general mattered little compared to the sense of humour, intellect, warmth - ability to make her feel comfortable and relaxed etc. All women I met disliked aggressive behaviour and would prefer her man to resolve conflicts diplomatically. From a personal point of view though I left home a couple of weeks after my eighteenth birthday and moved 100 miles away from home as pretty much the shyest person ever, since then I've been to Universiity, worked summer jobs in factories, worked in offices, done bar work, been a manager, been on the lowest rung in the workplace etc, in all that time I've always got on with everyone and from the shy little lad that left home become the guy that gets on with everyone and arranges the majority of the social events. Your personality is formed over time through various experiences. When you are good looking for example, your experience are good with lots of positive reinforcement which makes you easy going and confident.

The personality you have is created by the way other people treat you and the way people treat you is greatly influenced by physical appearance.

I am a tall athletic guy with very good education and background, it is impossible not to notice me when I walk by or enter a room. Maybe because of this I feel absolutely no need to dominate anyone or even have a conflict. In fact, it amuses me when someone attempts to do it, but in the vast majority of cases the ones who do it are short, physically less attractive men. Does it somehow make them bad? No. And in a lot of cases such men are more financially successful than tall strong men simply because they work more on themselves, their confidence, life goals etc.

I wouldn't necessarily say I don't have the look. I mean, I'm not tall, sure, but I'm definitely stronger/more built than the average guy.

It has nothing to do with being biased against "not having the look". It's just reality. Everyone deserves respect, no matter what they look like. As long as they are a good person. People are here to give their perspectives and this is mine.

@FriedPickles1218, you are welcome! I agree with you that everyone deserves respect, no matter how they look. And I also agree with you that being strong has little to do with being tall. In fact, I do not even know where that obsession with being tall came from. I am 186 cm which is above the average height for men in any country and while I am far from being among the tallest, I would love to be a few centimetres shorter: 178 cm or 180cm would be perfect. Why? I hate having to bruise my knees inside most buses, airplanes, even cars! In Madrid, Spain I had to bend down when entering many metro stations... Quite a lot of beds and couches end up being too short especially if you are in countries where the average height for men is below 180 cm. Yeah, maybe some guys view being tall as some kind of an advantage, I personally do not think so.

Simply put
Match a super good MMA type guy against a weaker guy that has all those other traits you listed?
He's likely going to go down hard.
Regardless of the fact that we've moved on as a species, might makes right, and he would be considered superior to the other male that exhibits the best of everything else, but not the physical strength.
The uncomfortable truth many don't seem to want to face is we're all animals. Very sophisticated ones, but animals nonetheless.
