How should I give him back the key to his apartment?

Was recently seeing a guy for two months but he called time on us last night (by text!!) because he still has feeling for his ex. He said he has been severly depressed all week over it so I dont really know what that means for us so dont want to push him away completely.
I still have a key to his apartment. TO be honest I dont want to be looking at it and he will need it for when he moves out so should I leave it in his post box next week and tell him its there so we won't have to see each other or text him and ask him does he want it back and leave it up to him? whats the best thing to do?

I think that by telling you he couldnt be with you, due to still having feelings for his ex, was the best thing for you. Its not good to still be in a relationship with someone who is still longing for another from their past... And telling you by text. Well. It must have been a really difficult thing to bring up and tell you about. So dont feel so down about the way he did it. At least he did it, and was too scared to do so in person. Maybe you should text or call him, asking if he needs/wants the apartment key back and just go from there. Or, you could post it through his letter box by hand with a note letting him know that you're returning it?

I say give it to him face to face. you will prove two things.
1) you have more guts than he does
2) handing him the key shows him that you are washing your hands off him too.

@Girlforhopeandlove and what would you gain by doing that? that is just weak-minded thinking. so because you were hurt emotionally you want to cost someone financially? i agreed with your first opinion, ask first. not sure about this one. plus with my opinion, she stings him back. without the extra frills.

and return it as soon as possible. the sooner, the more the sting. it means you too were quick to get over him too. that usually burns us guys.
