My ex boyfriend wished me Valentine's day... Is it normal for guys to wish their exes? please help?

Okay... It's not just about wishing me Valentine's day.. ever since we broke up (last July) he's been wishing me occasionally like "Merry Christmas", "hey, the first thing that came on my mind when the clock ticked 12 was you, so happy new year. Don't worry i'm, just wishing you as a friend and nothing more than that" and now on Valentine's day.. he's wished me "Haiiii... Happy Valentine's day!" , should i wish him back? Is he trying to get me back in his life? or what? I'm not really getting any of this stuff. So please help!

I was considering wishing my ex a happy Valentine's day, only because even though our break up wasn't pretty, we stayed as friends. I still care about him as a person but I would not want to be with him. So yeah, there is a chance like there usually is, but this is not exactly a sign for that.
