What does it mean when someone says, "We're just not on the same page"?

A guy I was seeing told me via text that we "just weren't on the same page" when I told him I couldn't do the casual thing. He said he was never looking for casual but everything was past tense and that was sort of that.

We were trying to make plans but our schedules clashed for pretty much 2 weeks. I gave him notice of my business trip well in advance but he 'forgot' until pretty much the last minute to tell me he was out of town the weekend prior to my trip. I guess I felt if this were an honest mistake the phone would be better and text was shady.

Left wondering if things were just lost in translation or an obvious blow off.... 5 dates with sleep overs so kinda sucky way to fizzle out. Is this soome sort of, 'mistakes were made' neutral way to cut and run?

It seems to me that he just isn't looking for the same thing that you are. He doesn't want a casual relationship like you do, so that was a deal breaker for him. And after two weeks of planning, it probably got frustrating. He probably is just looking for a reliable long relationship, and it doesn't seem that he was looking for an excuse to leave, it just wasn't working out. I really do hope that you find someone who wants the same things that you do, but this is not the guy for you. Good luck! :)

It can mean either two people are of a different way of thinking from each other on a paricular issue, or they don't want the same things

I guess he meant to say, you guys didn't agree on a particular situation together (I guess that whole casual thing) if I'm correct?

That's just a way to end the relationship without much fuss. It's a dating version of irreconcilable differences. It lets the relationship end without anyone being 'to blame'.

Sucky, sure. But better than having it drag on when somebody isn't into it. At least it's a nice, clean break. It should be easier to move on.

Maybe the saying needs to be updated. "We're just not using the same operating system."

Well sounds like there was a misunderstanding on the casual situation and he felt differently about it, but it was an easy way to cut and run as well

So it comes off as me wanting a casual relationship? Not intended but sort of why not everything is meant for text. I think after a month of dating telling someone on a Friday you forgot to mention you have to be out of town all weekend is at least a phone call or complete crap to cover other plans. Oh well, thanks for the response.

No problem, To be honest I think he went about it the wrong way and should have at least told you or explained it better and made the situation more clear instead of it just fizzling out as you described it
