Why does he downplay himself?

There's a guy I know. He's really cute and a lot of girls find him attractive. He's always saying how he's not that cute. How he's a lonely person. He downplays his greatness a lot and I wonder why. I don't expect him to be arrogant but I wonder if he's genuinely humble or maybe uncomfortable with the praise?

This isn't an "every guy knows" type of question, some things happen early in some people's lives to instill insecurity permanently, it takes a lot of doing to change that, in certain situations. For instance for me, I have a lot of trouble believing girls when they say this because I have 4 brothers, whom I think all look better than me and do better at life and have more friends and such and are constantly reminding me what a pos I am and why, and that's just one reason. A lot is from my childhood and stuff, so like yea maybe he's had a traumatic early life to instill these feelings of being a lesser being

Both. I'm the same way. Due to my beliefs in god/holy bible I choose too be humble and try to train myself in this way everyday cuz truthfully the way he is, is specifically designed to attract the right kind of people and it makes u more attractive/masculine too be this way cuz let's face it, women are the ones who truly need/want compliments, attention etc. Marry that man yesterday lol with the way most guys are, our type is seriously ur best option and outlook for the future if u want kids, house, a family and to not be a single parent.. he's ur guy
