I'm in a loving relationship with my wife but feel quite the same. There was a period when we were first together and dating that lasted for a couple of years where I only had eyes towards her. All other women just seemed like background noise.

That didn't last through the 7 years we've been together though. It especially kind of diminished after we started living together, doing routine things like cooking and cleaning, laundry, worrying about bills, showering and bathing together every day.

I know every inch of her body, there's nothing new to see when I undress her, though there's something always still welcome, attractive, but I know every inch of it. We've had sex thousands of times, I've mixed things up, experimented, she knows all the tricks up my sleeve. I think I satisfy her reasonably well, most of the time she falls asleep after while I get back and kill time doing things like answering questions on this site.

To me she's like my favorite food in the whole world. I never really tire of it. But then there's all sorts of food in this world, sometimes even if you have your favorite every single day, other food becomes exciting for the simple reason that it's different. Even girls who, probably objectively speaking, are less attractive than my wife become attractive for the sole reason that they're different. It's like if you had a 7-course gourmet French cuisine every day, even McDonalds might start to seem appealing.

The thing is, I don't act on those urges, but they're there. There's a challenge involved, but I do everything I can to avert risky scenarios. The vast majority of the time I spend talking to people of the opposite sex is spent telling stories about my wife, how we met, etc. I try to do everything I can to build a fence so that women aren't trying to pursue me in any way.

Another thing is that I look at those strangers of the opposite sex now, like some pretty girl in a party wearing an extremely short skirt and bending over and flashing me with something, as like "meat". I never objectified women before, but I do now. They might as well be headless generic things with a sexy butt. It's my way of keeping all the emotions out of it, to not dwell on it, but that biological drive is still there. But I've simplified it down to a purely sexual drive, to not fall in love with another woman's character, personality, all the things I would have done when I was single.

They're just "meat".

I was talking about this subject in another question but take a hypothetical: Let's say we had some kind of virtual reality porno that is so realistic, it's connected neurologically and delivering a stimulus which is indistinguishable from the real thing. In that case, I think men would still want to do it, and be "virtually cheating" on their wives. I must admit I would, if it were that easy, but I would attempt to compartmentalize it away from the real love I have for my wife which is still so much more meaningful than some virtual simulation.

Fortunately that's just a hypothetical for the time being. But it highlights kind of a difference between this quick and dirty meaningless sex simulation vs. something real with love attached. That hypothetical virtual reality kind of device is, however, appealing because it's truly no strings attached in the purest kind of way, inconsequential, some kind of fantasy simulator. If it wasn't inconsequential though, like my wife made it forbidden, then it would make me think twice.

The vast majority of men feel this way, yes. It's built into our instincts (both to "spread our seed" and to desire VARIATION), because men who do that stand the best chance of having children that survive into adulthood to have children themselves, thus passing on that man's genes. Men who had less desire to spread their seed or to desire variation in women were less likely to have children who had children - in other words, their genes weren't passed along, and their traits weakened.

This is no different than women who have a strong drive for a relationship (stability and emotional connection), a desire to have children, and a desire to "nest" (have a stable home that's fixed up nice) - these are also traits that greatly improve the odds of having children that live to have their own children, and thus pass down her genes.

Natural Selection doesn't care about feelings or social expectations - the only thing that matters is SURVIVAL and SUCCESSFUL REPRODUCTION. Anything that helps these two things generally gets passed on, and anything that hurts these things tends to get people killed off before they can reproduce. (At least, until VERY recently - post-WWII for the most part, when we've been able to insulate most people [in the first-world, at least] from nature with societal rules and advanced medicine.)

To go back to the original point, a man who had lots of children from different mothers would be less likely to lose them all to wars, famines, disease, or childbirth. Having many children simply increases the odds numerically, but having them with not only multiple women, but of multiple women of significantly different genetic backgrounds, means that a recessive gene that might cause his children with one woman to have birth defects or be susceptible to a given disease isn't likely to appear in the children he has with another woman. Without this desire, there would be far too much inbreeding, which leads to genetic weaknesses.

As in this example, just because a man has this DESIRE doesn't mean he'll ACT on it, but the desire itself is a natural part of being a human male and isn't likely to change anytime soon.

You can be romantically attracted to person A, be emotionally attached to person B, get sexually aroused by person C.

It is the attraction and attachment between us that make our relationships unique, not our sexual desire.

For most people at least the attraction and sexual desire are mixed. There are few people who can look at people only as tools for sexual gratification. Most people drift apart because they drift apart romantically and/or they don't have that deep understanding of and emotions for each other.

When you are in the deepest truest love, you are monogamous in every way; I was.

However, there is also a fantastic biological imperative in men to copulate with females. It's not so much that we crave variety as much as we look at woman and instantly think "Yes" or "No" about if we'd fuck her... and it the answer is usually "Yes".

Now, in defense of men, you need to understand that this is driven by evolution in all sexual animals. Females bear young which severely limits the spreading of genes because her genes are only spread by going into the children that she gives birth too (or donates eggs for). So, from an evolutionary perspective, the role of females in a species is primarily to make the next generation. Men don't have that child-bearing burden, so they can take advantage of that and spread their genes. So, from an evolutionary perspective, the role of males in a species is primarily to enhance genetic diversity which helps prevent species extinction and maximizes the adaptation success of the evolution of the species.

Of course, as a guy, we don't think consciously like that. Our simple program is "Fuck her? Yes or No..." and we do that will all people we see how look like sexually viable females.

Love - real love that is - counteracts that and that is an evolutionary response too because love keeps us around to help successfully raise our kids to adulthood. Anyway, this is why a broken heart is so devastating; in essence, by being in love, we've reprogrammed ourselves to be monogamous and this is against our fundamental sexual nature. Once we are dumped, it fucks us up seriously because we only want to fuck the woman we love... and now we can't but still have the imperative to fuck. Real deep true love is 1) extremely rare and 2) is very hard to keep alive. He may still love his wife, but it isn't the deep kind anymore.
