Why does he always fish for compliments?

I am sure this guy likes me as I like him, but he's gotten on my last nerve and I'm just about ready to ignore him, because he always fishes for compliments, and he wants me to inflate his ego by telling him he's cute or that he has beautiful facial features, and whenever he asks and I tell him, he just says "thanks." And he never returns the compliment back. My best friend who is a guy is always telling me I am beautiful, just because. He never expects anything in return. How come this guy won't compliment me? Is he just completely self-absorbed in himself or what? This is not a way to win a girl over!

The guy probably doesn't hear it very often. He could have some distorted childhood that could leave him hungry for attention. I would be up front and tell him I have no problem with giving compliments, but when they are forced, it's no longer fun and special.
