I personally believe in the concept of Masculinity, but I believe it lays much more in the personality/Behavior than the looks. For me a masculine man is a man who makes me feel feminine. I don't agree with all the criteria that are used to define a manly man in our mainstream society. For example a manly man in my definition is wise and calm, so if he's aggressive it makes him more childish than manly. But aggressiveness seems to be highly correlated to masculinity in the media.
I don't belive in the concept of masuclinity, it's a social construct.

[Debate] what makes a man "Masculine" in your opinion?
Masculinity was norm and it is still norm in many cultures around the world. Its only rise of feminism that resulted in decline of Masculinity. Compare cultures where feminism does not have any foothold or influence.
The problem is the chain of Masculinity broke in mere two generations and no one knows how to reconnect and become more Masculine, decline of Testosterone is also cited as being one of the reasons. It was our Grandmothers, first generation influenced by feminism that raised our fathers being less Masculine. Then our mothers raised us boys being even less Masculine.
From feminist perspective Masculinity is toxic and must be eradicated. Its a social construct. You don't even see it on TV and yet bad boy characters are popular among women because they have Masculine traits. In one poll women answered what characters they find most attractive 80% were bad boys. Its no secret guys percieved to be Masculine do better with girls.
Is Masculinity a Social Construct... unlikely as it existed as far back we can go in history. Sure there may have been certain social influences varying by time or culture, but concept of Masculinity always existed. It is however culture and mostly due to feminism that Masculinity is in decline, so Masculinity wasn't a social construct lack of Masculinity is a social construct. How can Masculinity suddenly vanish?
Fact is girls still find Masculinity and Masculine traits very attractive. Feminism wanted to destroy Masculinity and succeeded but did not mean women's attitude kept with decline of Masculinity. Like you said its not physical appearance that makes someone Masculine, Masculine guys just *exude* Masculinity. The problem being in mere two generations guys have no idea what Masculinity is or how to exude that Mamsculinity again. Many are trying to figure it out.. not successfully so far.
I think its completely ridiculous to call it a social construct. Or is it just a coincidence that in every major civilization on earth these traits have been admirable for men to possess? It's definitely biological.
I've a very similar take on masculinity as you do. Most of the time, whenever I think a man is "masculine" it almost has nothing to do with his looks or physique or whatever. Whenever I think a man is masculine, it's mostly due to his personality or how he has treated me/others. Ie: being helpful, helping me carry things/open doors etc. Being decisive and wise. Making decisions and carrying through with it. Responsible. Takes good care of me. It's when a man makes me feel like a woman? Sadly i don't live in a society where most men I meet are like that.
how would a man make you feel more like a woman? do you not feel like you are a woman without err well the help of a man? (I don't mean for this to sound rude, I'm just curious I promise lol).
so do you not feel very womanly without those things in a man? like if you had a man who didn't quite reach those traits you say are masculine, would that make you feel less feminine?
@KenM9215 I do. But we are talking in the context of a man's masculinity here? Men who do all those things for me make me feel more feminine than I already am. I'm not sure if you are trying to be impertinent on purpose by asking all these questions actually; cause I think you already know the answer to them but you're trying to fish for a certain type of response.
honestly I'm not trying to fish for any time of response. I'm just merely trying to understand from someone elses point of view as to how someone else can make them feel more of something that they already are I. E. a woman making me feel more masculine than I know I already am... for me I wouldn't feel any more masculine, I would just notice the difference more between her femininity and my masculinity. BUT thats just me.
Actually, thinking about it, I do notice the difference between whether a man is more "masculine" or more "feminine" based on well, whatever he does when he's with me. A more "masculine" man will definitely make me feel more feminine, or rather, bring out more of my feminine side than a "feminine" man will.

Hmm for me, I think it's the society I live in. Cause I do notice a difference in the behaviour of my foreign colleagues compared to guys here. The men here are pretty "feminine" and verrryyy passive and kind of "self-centred". For me it's really behaviour that makes me feel he's looking out for others/taking care of others around him. Whether he's romantically interested is irrelevant to me. So like holding the doors, offering to help me carry something I'm clearly struggling with. I can't count the number of times I'm clearing struggling with a lot of things and received help (not from the men who just stand there and watch, but from the ladies). Also decision-making. I like men who are pretty decisive and not wishy-washy and just leave all the decision-making to the ladies. Curiosity is fine, as long as isn't something else.. lol.
@KenM9215 I strongly believe that in each and every human interaction, there's some underlying dynamic going on. Whether it be a powerplay or someone being more active/passive vice versa or something else; like a sort of yin-yang element. And when a person is being very "masculine" (and this isn't just limited to the men), it tends to bring out my more feminine side. And if someone is being more "feminine" it tends to bring out my "masculine" side.
@KenM9215 Sorry I don't feel comfortable revealing where I'm from. I'm just not from the States :P Well, it's the internet i guess so it's hard to tell someone's intentions. But I've "met" people who are actually rather rude/obnoxious/troll-like but try and disguise it as genuine curiosity.
Both biological and social. the sexes are masculine or feminine by biology. But since our enviroment and what stimulates us can override our biology as in feminine men or masculine women for example. this is more relevant in the lgbt community they tend to be stimulated by the opposing sex more so they pick up their mannerism, body language, behaviours transgenders are a really good example of this.
Masculine guys have to behave like real man and be corteous to women and have proper ettiquette. They also should be smart and know it because they're confident. They also should have a strong physique. This might not mean lot of muscles but they shouldn't have boobs like females do.
Yes I'm masculine both from a biological standpoint because of my testosterone levels which gives me bodily hair growth and my pretty big and rigged jawline and easy muscle growth/toning.
And from a traditional standpoint because I was raised traditionally and classically meaning I can fight, defend myself and others. I'm good with my hands, manual labor etc, fixing things. I can be and am emotional/romantic but I can also compartmentalize my emotions or just flat out sever them out completely if I need to. I honestly don't give a rats ass what people think about me or my views, I'm passionate about the things and people I care about. I am completely comfortable and secure with who and what I am and I strive to be the best I can be.
I also have proper etiquette and manners, being a gentleman, and I own up to my faults and drawbacks, flaws as I'm not perfect not even close, no one is.
Masculinity does exist and so does femininity... most people fall in between these two and maybe lean toward one more than the other Some guys are VERY masculine (at the end of the rope) Some girls are very feminine (opposite end of the rope) But most people lie in the middle..
Masculinity to me is generally a very strong man who shows barely any emotions He doesn't like to discuss his feelings He doesn't talk much about what's going on, keeps things short He's a hard worker Gets to the point I don't know, just really masculine traits as opposed to feminine traits.. ya feel

@KenM9215 I wish that more men were expressive/open about their feelings, it kinda sucks when you guys keep your emotions to yourself because you don't want to look a certain way..
I've always felt that open communication and showing of emotions to be a good thing (usually... sometimes it depends on the place and situation). a lot of guys are more emotional than you ladies realize... but we are conditioned from early on that "real men" don't cry, or to suck it up, or other stupid things like that. thankfully that was never really pushed on me by those who raised me, but more so from others around me. I would be a hypocrite if I said I don't try and appear to be "strong" or "like a rock" when it comes to emotions but if I get close enough to someone I have no problem expressing myself.
I believe that a manly man has a lot of testosterone. stress is bad for testosterone so a manly man is calm. Alcohol is a also bad for it so he does not drink, or he drinks with moderation. Lack of sleep is also bad for it so he sleeps enough. A manly man distincts himself from other men and he does not give in to peer pressure of his 'bros'. He does not neglect his emotions, he is charismatic and has confidence. He is not reckless but he can stand up for himself. He does not talk for the sake of talking, he makes his words count. I dont believe in artificially created masculinity. The media does not know what a manly man is. It gives the wrong idea.
Of course mascilinity is a social construct but it doesn't mean I don't believe in it. To me masculinity is strength, physically, mentally and strength of character and strength in your convictions. But I also think too much masculinity is overrated. I do like a bit of softness in there and a someone who doesn't care what people think.
The ability to make you come, to push your sexual comfort zone. That's basic masculinity. I can write poetry but myself and most guys would probably prefer to tear you top off making buttons pop and rip your hopefully soaked panties off with my teeth, take you then and all over. There are also facial features that separate men from women, such as facial hair, thicker eyebrows, and a defined jawline. Yet a person can't be considered masculine if he behaves indifferently. A man is someone who's confident, responsible, honest, and a protector to those he loves. A man isn't afraid to speak up but at the same time gives a chance for others to speak as he listens. Though someone may seem masculine, his behavior can easily separate him from a "real" man; a masculine appearance and behavior must coexist. These traits can exist among both sexes but a man can EASILY be pointed out without thought.
Yeah I am masculine, I have ''Mesomorph'' body type which is for only people whom were exposed to high testestorone hormones, when in venter. When I was a kid I've been always told I was more strong and muscular compared to my peers even when I wasn't working out. I easily get aggressive to small things, when I have a problem I dont solve this by talking, I usually fight. And many other things you see there, I am happy to be masculine for sure and I think most of women love masculine man.

It's just a social construct because some of the traits viewed as "masculine" can also be found in some girls. It all depends on combination of genes, culture/society and upbringing. The only real masculine and feminine things are the sex organs, nothing else.
I guess a strong character plays a role, plus maybe some muscle and chest hair... That's the best I can produce. I think I'm only moderately masculine :o not much muscle and hardly any chest hairs :-(
I agree with you. I also think a strong jawline and body hair shows masculinity. Is it weird I love how small our body parts are (like hands) compared to theirs?
I kinda believe in it but I wouldn't agree with many of the terms on that pic

Um... can I vote "I believe in the concept of masculinity as a social construct"? Because I do believe it exists, but I don't think that means it can't be a social construct... First answer: I would most definitely NOT consider myself masculine! (Can I answer the second question and say I would want to be with a masculine woman?)

In a word: Strong. Men are strong mentally and physically. They endure and they provide - in tangible things such as money and in terms of emotional support. They are a rock - that is, they are there for their family.
It's all perspective, I think anyone over 18+ who has any kind of responsibilities is a man. To be quite honest.

Courage not aggressiveness what makes someone manly. Like ElissaDido said in her question aggressiveness in childish. Confidence, assertiveness and courage NOT aggressiveness. No one likes a bully. Someone with courage is Masculine someone aggressive is just weak.
