What does it mean when a guy says I miss you & I wish you were here?

This guy I know (I am pretty sure has a crush on me but hasn't told me yet) says to me "do you miss me?" Also, he told me one night when he was riding home alone on a train that he was riding alone. I said too bad nobody is there to keep you company. Then re replied, via text message: "I wish you were here too cutie." What does this exactly mean? I mean, I am trying to figure out if he is serious or just joking. Because a lot of guys can be flirting (in a joking way w/o being serious. Then again, some guys are really serious.
