If a guy calls a girl 'curvy', is he really just implying that she's fat-ish?

This is what guys mean when they say "curvy". Technically, these women have a higher-than-average body fat percentage - but it's all in the right places - their CURVES (boobs, hips, ass). They're not "fat" in that they have defined waistlines, no bellies, fat rolls, or arm fat.

It's WOMEN who grossly misuse the turn "curvy" to mean fat (generally when actually-fat women are describing themselves).

Granted, the girls I posted here are an extreme version of "curvy", but they aren't fat. Still, women could have much less pronounced curves and and still be curvy.

No, not at all. You can be skinny and curvy at the same time. Curvy just means you have a noticeable difference in shoulder-waist-hip size and have big boobs and a booty to match. Curvy is my favourite body type by far, it's so sexy.

no. Why would you say that? curvy just means she has what a woman should have, curves. breasts, hips, etc. I don't date super skinny women because I like meat on my woman's bones. But I have see even overweight women that didn't have curves.

Guys don't mean it as insult
Sometimes it's the polite thing to say instead of calling a girl fat, but in my opinion, from most men, it's a compliment rather than an insult. Take my girlfriend. She's got a small bit of weight around her hips and still has a bit of a post pregnancy belly. She is insecure about it but I find it extremely attractive and ugly in no way. I refer to her as "curvy", and for me that perfectly describes her "hourglass" figure

Most likely not. When a woman says curvy she might mean shaped like a whale. When guys say it they mean she has good/attractive proportions and is NOT shaped like a whale.

@asker, um, you have an issue. The guy did not call you 'fat'... and have you seen what women without fat look like? They look like men. Straight, normal guys ain't interested in anorexics or extreme body builders. Shape is what matters. Two women with curves could look the same but one has a lot more muscle than the other. They are both curvy and they both will have some body fat.
