What does it mean if a guy comforts you?

I recently just finished finals in college, and the other night I was feeling really upset because I'd horribly failed my math final. It was the first test I've ever failed, so it made me feel really bad. I was sitting in my dorm room super upset and one of my guy friends knocked on my door to check up on me and see if I was ok. I don't remember telling him that I failed my test, so I guess he found out because I took the test with his best friend. I found it kinda weird at first when he came to comfort me because we aren't super close (but we used to be), and a lot of guys typically aren't the ones to comfort people. So what does it mean if a guy comforts you?
