Why is he so unreachable?

We were celebrating a birthday all weekend and there’s this guy, he’s so funny and I like his style so much, I feel like he’s my kind of person, like even as just a friend. But he only seems to be comfortable around his friends, when it comes to other people he’s either way too shy or he just doesn’t care cause he was the only person not reaching anyone except his friends. I also can be extremely shy, but it usually depends on the connection with the other person, sometimes the vibe is so good I’m comfortable right away but with him, i feel like there’s this wall because he’s shy and I’m shy and it’s like unreachable.
