The phone is not for conversations, it is for setting up appointments and your next date. The phone is where your relationship goes to die and "half-truths" as well as "misreadings" happen. He is right to not talk to you over the phone rather than in person where you can read each other's moods and have physical contact.
He can be like me and think typing on a phone is a major pain. If you want a conversation with me you'll actually have to talk to me or make sure I can use a proper keyboard.

Maybe he’s nervous/shy/awkward or doesn’t want to say the wrong thing. Sometimes when u really like someone it might be hard to be comfortable and make conversation with them at first.
