Why do some guys push away the girls they like? What are they scared of?

Like if he has secret feelings for his friend and she confronts him asking why he's avoiding her. He leaves her on read, avoid her, act like a petty coward, treat her like he couldn't care less. When the truth he cares about her and likes her more than any other girl.
Is he scared to face his own feelings for her? What do guys get scared of?

Some guys are afraid to face their emotions and/or fear future rejection. I’ve dealt with a guy like this before. Everyone told me how much he liked me but he did the opposite by pulling away after I’ve shown interest. I just let it be.
