I’m so bothered by my boyfriend’s dark humor. He’s a great guy but it just throws me off when he says things?

So me and my boyfriend have been in a serious relationship for 3 years now, and are planning to have a long term relationship. He’s a great guy, doesn’t drink or smoke, is very caring and present, and is very playful and has kind of a “dad” personality I like to say. There is this thing he does tho, and its say some really nasty jokes which I think would qualify as “dark humor.” I’ve asked him to tone it down in the past, bc it really bothers me. He has significantly, but today it happened again and I really hated it. We were watching a very gory TV show, and in this one scene a woman went out to smoke, and suddenly got a machete to her head. My boyfriend looked surprised and after like 5 seconds he went “see my love? Don’t smoke, or else someone will stick a machete in your head.” I don’t even smoke. I get that it was a joke but wtf. Should you even joke around with your girlfriend like this? He looked fine after he said it, and just kept on watching the show. After a minute of analyzing the situation I realized I was really bothered by it, so I asked him not to make more jokes like that. He didn’t say anything but I could tell he understood by his face. He then played the tv show and we just kept on going. I still feel very unsettled by his joke/comment.
