We fought and instead of solve it, he took out his phone and watched videos about cars. He was not listening to me or anything. He zoned out completely. Is he being a freak?

It's called calming down. Just because you want to stay within the emotional rollercoaster doesn't mean he wants to. And generally speaking there will be no good solutions happening in a fight, but when you deal with the issues AFTER calming down

A freak? No. Men tend to avoid contention so he shutdown. It is actually more common in men to do something along these lines. Especially if he feels the fight is going no where or that he feels you are not hearing him.
