Why do girls "fake smile"?

So I've been talking to this girl who was a bit shy with me but recently she has opened up. Now she initiates conversations and we playfully insult each other and she makes a lot of eye contact and gives me this really cute , wide smile when I'm messing with her. Sometimes when we aren't talking but we walk past each other or she sees me she gives me this really fake looking grin, like she is nervous or feels like she has to smile, why is this? It makes me a bit uncomfortable when she does this because it obviously isn't the smile I'm used to see. Why does she do this? Any particular reason behind it? I see her and I don't know if I should smile back or what, most of the time I pretend I don't see it.

Talk to her, wave to her, say hi, etc. IT sounds like she feels like when you guys past by each other that its an awkward situation. That's not abnormal for a girl who's shy to feel about towards a guy she is interested in. She doesn't know what to do and she doesn't want to be rude and not smile so she does it to show that she's there and still interested instead of brushing you off when she sees you. Don't make that situation awkward for her, talk to her and I'm sure she'll open up even more towards you.

People fake smile to be polite. Obviously no one is happy all of the time, but no one wants to talk to people who always have an Eeyore puss on.

Well yeah, I fake smile too sometimes, but this is a big ass grin she gives me. Maybe I'm overthinking it but sometimes makes me feel like I make her uncomfortable and should stop talking to her to make things easy for her.

a lot of times it is for the sake of politeness or social grace. it's best to just talk to her and try to "figure her out" more. That might give you a better idea of why she does what she does.

also, guys tend to like girls' smiles, so that may be a reason.

a fake smile in the hall is a good thing, it means she notices you and wants to impress you.. so just give her some more excuses to give you real smiles.

I don't ignore her, I just make like I don't see the actual smile and I just say "whats up" or whatever because I know that's not her real smile, she kinda looks uncomfortable to me that's all.
