Why do girls "fake smile" sometimes?

So I like this girl. We talk and joke a lot although she seems a bit nervous when I'm talking to her one on one (she is a lot more at ease with everybody else). Sometimes when we pass each other on the hall I can feel she is looking at me as we walk so I look at her, make eye contact and then she will give me this really fake looking grin as we walk past each other, its like she is nervous or I make her uncomfortable (she is the one looking at me to begin with, its not like I'm staring at her) why is she doing this? she usually polite smiles at others with her mouth closed, it looks more natural, but I don't know why I get "the grin", I've told her I like her smile (the full teeth one) but when its real, not the fake one lol, why would she be doing this?

Also, isn't a lot more work to open your mouth and show ALL your teeth on the "smile" that to just give a fake one but stretching the sides of your mouth? It just seems likes she is doing a lot of work and makes me a bit uncomfortable just thinking what she could be thinking to give me that grin, hell, I'd take no smile at all.

I'd say she is attracted to you but doesn't know what to say, so she gets nervous and then feels awkward, then she's embarrassed and the natural smile is suppressed by this, but because she likes you she wants to smile so she forces one. I do this with a guy at work that I am crazy attracted to, I must look demented when I smile at him, it's just nerves. Saying that if you have seen her natural smile, that would suggest she is getting more comfortable around you so she will in time open up more.

It does look kind of "demented" lol. I've seen her smile and its really nice, although sometimes she tries to turn her head away from me when I make her smile lol. She tries to act all serious and mature with me and when I make her crack up she tries to hide. Its just a weird smile and she does it every time we cross paths but aren't really talking, we just look at each other.I give her usually the half smile with the side of my mouth and I get the big grin, which is cute, but just looks odd lol

I would say enjoy the fact that she is making an attempt to smile back, she obviously likes you, if she didn't she wouldn't give you any kinda smile. Just try and gently banter with her, make her fel more comfortable with you and try to find a common interest to talk about, then next time she has something to use as a conversation opener.

I always give people tense smiles in passing. I wish I didn't, but it just like, doesn't come naturally to give a genuine happy smile to people in situations like that. It's more of a tight lipped thing that actually looks kind of stupid, but that's just what happens...

haha, I guess I better stop looking at her, I don't like "tense" anything. It'll feel like I'm ignoring her but she'll get over it.

you don't have to ignore her. I don't mean it makes me tense, I just mean it looks that way. I dunno, this is just me. It could totally not be what's going on here.

I have a coworker who does that. Just a very forced fakey smile every time I'm around her. Mostly I think its because we don't know what to say to each other. Maybe she is just acting silly with you, although, if I truly like a guy, there's no faking to my smile. Though sometimes, if I have fun with a guy but am not attracted to him, I'm more relaxed to joke around and make stupid faces.
