What should I say to a former friend?

I have a guy friend I haven’t spoken to in a year. Things didn’t really end right and there’s been pride along the way. So today I wished him a happy birthday and he said Thank you “name” ! Hope you’ve been well

Should I respond to that and ask him too? Or nothing else? I don't know what he could mean/the context of it
