From the men's reactions, I think it's safe to say that women do this as well. But people do this because, well they can get away with it. I've been a dude's back up plan. It wasn't fun. But I realize he wanted to make sure the next girl was better than me. He needed time to see if she would be worth more than me. And kept me hooked just in case it didn't work out without her. These people are actually super insecure. They honestly don't think they will ever be enough especially for the long run so they are always looking for their next dish. But since they are insecure, they also don't want to be alone at any given time. It's just super sad. But seriously good for you girl that you haven't let yourself be used this way! Because our modern culture has normalized the idea of women acting like wives towards men who won't even make the effort to propose or marry you.
No wife benefits for a man who can't officially call you his wife.
If he wants to leave he would have to think twice before because of divorce and it will push both parties of the couple to work harder to preserve the relationship.

It's because those guys are players and already have several other women on the line, so they have no need or desire to commit to any one woman. Okay, I’m not entirely sure that was English, but “ghosting” someone isn’t keeping them as a backup plan, really. It’s rejection without the confrontation, if they come back later, then you can say they tried to make you a backup plan. But it’s usually a non-confrontational way to reject someone.
