He probably has different ideas about what constitutes a "boyfriend". Try talking to him about what you'd like him to do differently. In general, it's best to assume benign motivations in other people, even when you suspect it's not true; if it is, they're more likely to be willing to fix things, and if it's not, you may manage to persuade (or guilt) them into working with you. It's much easier to go UP the hostility ladder than DOWN it.

Maybe he tells you that you're his girlfriend, but tells everybody else that you're just a fuck buddy.
That way if you cheat he doesn't have to be embarrassed.
