Too many pampered people these days!! They need to grow a thicker skin!! I have several ethnicities in my lineage and you could tell; a joke about any one of them and I wouldn't give a shit!! Especially if it was actually funny! (Some jokes, no matter what they're about, are just dumb!)
Back in the late `70's, ethnic jokes were all the rage and everybody loved them!! I don't recall the guy's name but, he put out DOZENS of joke books on various ethnicities!! They were designed to be two books in one. From the front to the middle (of the first one) they were all Polish jokes (because EVERYBODY told Polish jokes!!), from back to middle, they were all Italian jokes. Next it was Irish / Jewish, then Black / White, Virgin / Non virgin, Religious / not so religious, Gay / Lesbian, etc.. Several of them had 2 or 3 sequels!! I collected and read them all!
Hardly anybody gave a shit!! Everyone knew it was just JOKES. One thing I noticed about them was that, quite a few of the jokes were used to the various ethnicities! several of the Polish jokes would turn up in the Irish section, etc.!! So, it really had NOTHING to do with the ethnicity, it was all about the joke!! Use whatever ethnicity you like (or dislike) and the joke still works!

If he didn't know you have zero tolerance for that sort of humor I think you should let it go after you have informed him that you don't like that sort of humor. Sometimes we just parrot what our friends say or that we consider the shock reaction as the punchline rather that the actual joke. I am not him so I will not speak for him but this is an opportunity to lay boundaries and gain understanding.
I would think it is worrying because the guy really thinks the xenophobic joke is funny and thinks nothing of it.
But is the joke more on xenophobia or is it more stereotypical? There is a difference.
