Yeah he really wants to talk to you i guess, and there's not enough ways for him to casually initiate it.

That's cause it goes two ways. For example, the next time he does this, instead of just replying with a thanks maybe reply with a "thanks! Also what have you been up to lately?" or something similar.

Yeah you can if you want to but him not responding to you afterwards could mean one of two things: he's not interested in furthering the conversation or you're a dry texter. If you are going to talk to him more put enough effort into it
