Because they are kids, obviously kids are not thinking about sexual activity and they shouldn't be at that age, once puberty starts hitting that's when they start to gain these feelings and intentions. Besides that, they usually link the opposite gender as different and see the same gender as cool and fun because that's how they perceive themselves.

Boys don't naturally find girls gross as children. Adults put those ideas in their heads so that children don't try to have any relations that adults deem inappropriate.
