He should know how to add your name and number to his phone contacts this sounds like a fishy story he's telling you but I could be wrong I would be asking him more questions, I have memory impairment due to being on medication and I know how to add a phone number to my contacts list

Another idea is to flat out have him hold the out and if it doesn't have a case on it fake that you are trying to look at the phone like you want a new one. and scratch it slightly on the back take a pic of the scratch and the next visit check if its the same phone >.>

What a lot of people who don't know much about phones is often times phones backs are about as well made as cheap cell phones (often cheap acrylic plastic or fake wood plastic. >.>). It should be pretty telling if its the same phone. With any luck he will mistake the scratch for like dropping it on the floor once in the past XD.

I've dealt with forgetful and or malicious people before. This is one way to kinda keep tabs and if anything goes really wrong most phones ultimately ARE very much replaceable XD. If he gets too made or he tries to blame it on ya just buy the man like a phone upgrade LOL if he turns out genuine.
