People are not just “confident” like it’s part of their personality. Someone who appears confident (assuming they are not faking it, which is way more common than you would think) is someone who is not anxious in the specific context your observing them in. E. g. they have an easy time being with friends of the same gender, or playing a role which they are used to. They will suddenly become “not confident” when they are out of their comfort zone.

So, if your observation are accurate that he freezes around you, it could mean that something is out of his comfort zone. It could be that he’s afraid of you for some reason, just to throw a random thought. For example some guys will be scared to be judged by people who can get them in trouble, or remind them of their parents or whatever.

All of this was to just introduce the answer you were looking for. It could be that he likes you and doesn’t want to mess it up, and he’s “out of his comfort zone” because he doesn’t know how to handle a situation where he’s emotionally vulnerable. We’ve all been through that, so it’s a likely explanation. Maybe not the only one.
