Why would he do that? Does this mean anything?

Scenario: a girl and a guy communicate regularly with each other through social media. Almost 2 years. Never met each other in real life. The guy has a girlfriend. It looks like a serious relationship. The girl knew about this from the beginning. The guy just mentioned once his girlfriend in a conversation. The guy and girl seem to have a good friendly connection. The guy told her that he loves reading her texts and is glad that they talk to each other. He’s always very kind and communicative. The girl never tried to deliberately flirt or whatsoever. The guy seems also loyal. One day the girl discusses a project of the guy. She sends him a text. The guy answers and tell’s her that he likes her analyses. And then he says: I talked about you to my girlfriend. And discusses further the project and writes again that his girlfriend analyzed the same that I wrote. It looks like it’s the first time in two years that he mentioned the girl to his girlfriend. This is an assumption by the way.

Why would he suddenly mention his girlfriend if he never talked about her before (except once when he said he was going on a trip with her) ? Why would a guy do that? Is this a some subtle “back of” sign? Or something else? The mentioning of his girlfriend looked so off place in his text.

Sounds to me like he considers you his friend and wanted to let you know that he discussed it with her to let you know. She seems to be comfortable with him conversing with you, otherwise you mite not hear from him. Don't read to much into this but you could just ask him. I think you should continue on as you have been. Unless you're catching feelings but that's a different question.

Definitely a back off sign. The girl knew he had a girlfriend. It sounds like the girl is already catching feelings but the guy wants to eliminate any doubt as to if she thinks he may be falling for her.
