Why did he tell me we couldn’t be friends?

He is married-hear me out before you judge me. We met at work and were attracted to each other but nothing ever happened. I haven’t worked with him for 2 years now and barely ever talk. It’s like once every 6-9 months. When we do it’s quick and very surface level before he politely ends it. The last time we talked he called me and said that we can’t even be friends…we can talk here and there but “unfortunately that’s all we’ll ever be.” I’m kind of stunned he normally is very careful not to say hurtful things and the way it was left previously it’s not like there was bad blood or anything.

Why would he say that particularly if it never went anywhere?

It may not be him at all maybe his wife don't like him talking to other women around and he is just trying to walk the line his wife has set for him

I doubt it’s that…he made the comment “I don’t have friends my wife doesn’t know about”. I guess meaning I’m not the type of person he’d integrate as a friend in his life.

Maybe he thinks things can take turns into directions he would not want with a friend like you around , or his wife would be hard on him for having a friend like you and think you are more than a friend even though you are not

Asker: That would be exactly the point. She knows you his friend and can see through you two. So she's told him specifically not to speak to you and is keeping a keen eye.

I'd say he's attracted to you and thinks you were flirting with or attracted to him. So, he decided to pull a full stop. Rather than have temptation. Whether it was real or imagined.

You hardly ever talk anyway. His wife probably found out about you. Or he cheated and she made him cut off contact with ANY woman.
