Why is it that nerds are usually physically unattractive in school?

I noticed in school that people who usually have the personality of a nerd (both the smart and other ones) tend to be less attractive physically than the other kids.
The normal or less interesting kids were often the attractive or just plain looking ones. Why is this?

Because physically attractive kids don't get labeled as nerds.

I think nerdy people in school just tend to focus less on looks and more on academics or clubs. And those who are not nerds focus more on how they look and like take care of their physical appearance.
