+1 yThere's a fine line between toxic masculinity and chivalry. Some men open the door for women because they want to honor the woman they're with, some open the door to be in control. You can always tell these men because when someone tries to open the door for them they refuse and insist on holding the door for that person. A man who wants to honor his woman would be secure enough in his own skin to allow another man to open the door for him. A man who is toxically masculine thinks that another man holding the door for him makes him less than a man. My point is some men think they are being chivalrous and manly, but really they're being insecure jerks. They're trying to live up to the standard society puts on them and they are burdened with dysfunction from their childhood. They would have to reach a certain level of maturity to be honest with themselves and acknowledge their insecurity and grow past it. Another example is when you greet somebody as they enter a store but since they're a manly man they are too tough and cool to greet you back or even smile in your direction. It's like they think this is how a man is supposed to act but really they are showing their insecurity insecurity. So to answer your question some men never reach that level of maturity and are stuck being toxic.

This is the dumbest shit ever… so if I don’t let someone hold the door for me but I hold the door for others then I’m toxic? Do people like that eve exist I've never even once seen a man refuse to use a door held for them… then again I’ve been yelled at by a woman for holding the door for her…
There so much wrong with how you think here. Well normally this is good but because you did it this way or were thinking like this suddenly it’s bad. No wonder men don’t wanna be what women want anymore. - +1 y
@VanillaSalt to some it's politeness to hold a door to others it's an animalistic display of dominance by insisting to be the last one through the door. I'm saying this because I remember that from a documentary about body language, I'm not claiming to be an expert. Don't be an ass just cuz you can. It's all about motive just like many other things in life and if your motive is pure when you hold the door then who gives af what I say. If it doesn't bother you to walk through a door held by another man then I guess I'm not talking to your fucking ass! I see men all the time attempt to hold the door for each other but they insist on taking the door and holding for themselves. WTF you haven't seen it? That's a crock of shit!
Idgaf what an insecure beta male wants in a women and your not going to tell me my value based on your chauvinism. This is exactly what I'm talking about, You criticize what I say then in the same comment prove me right. - +1 y
Not my fault you can’t handle criticism sweetheart. I don’t think I’m better then you cause ima man so it’s not chauvinism… I think I’m better then you cause you’re being a dumbass.
Your assumption of my chauvinism is the reason I called you out in the first place. You associate hate where there is none and make basic standards impossible. Men should hold the door for women or their not chivalrous but if they don’t WANT to do it for them for the reason you determine to be “right” then their toxic… you determine their reasoning. You determine what’s right and wrong.
I’m not going to be judged by your standards. Your a hateful, spiteful, venomous snake spitting venom everywhere then you question why people are toxic. - +1 y
Your the queen of insecure fefails

Yes exactly
+1 yI think that testosterone may factor in this. But I wonder this myself. My mom's previous boyfriend lived off welfare and never even tried to get a job for 4 years until she finally kicked him out. I was expected to work a 16-18 hour shift and come home then take care of housework while he sat and watched TV literally all day everyday. He would get mad when I refused and told him to do it. So yeah I have no idea why.

+1 yThey have to expect , desire, and/or demand it as they know it ain't coming through action. I often say a girl can't bail if she is kept swept off her feet and smiling, something one does, not says. Hell, half of em don't even know what respect is.

It's just that I came from a different time. In my day a man was his girls pitbull & her bulldozer and would take a bullet or a beatin for her. Before thug culture, they dk what honor is so can't know what respect is and if he don't know how to speak to or treat her... nothing does he know about touching her.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yIn my opinion there should be basic respect that you show ANYONE, that's just there and doesn't need to be "earned" (unless they show not to deserve that even). Basically just human decency, which seem to really be lacking these days and getting worse over time it seems. But you might be talking about something different, in which case it depends on the specific person and circumstances or relationship. Have they done anything to NOT deserve any respect? That's the question I think should be asked instead of what have they done.

Well I see respect in 2 forms. The form all living creatures get by being and the form given through hard work and merit.
The members of the male gender that expect or demand respect from women are more likely, in my opinion, to also suffer in the building and maintaining of other relationships in other spheres of his life. I would say that we all “desire” respect, especially from the opposite sex, especially from within our own communities, and the males you are referencing likely do not understand the way to navigate this desire to turn it into reality because they may historically lack the patience, social skills, and/or relationship modeling role models in their orbit. You get what you give.

To quote Tony Soprano 'Those who want respect, give respect'

+1 yDefinitely a give and take if you want a relationship and both should have respect for each other’s contributions and if there isn’t then something needs to change or the relationship is destined for failure. Supposed to be a team effort!
