Not *only* because of that, but it plays a role, yes. These friends are potential partners, they're going to spend time with the girls they're interested in. Platonic friendships are usually coincidental, usually the result of a guy already being in a relationship or not being attracted to a girl while circumstances tend to put these people in the same place. If I'm single and interested in a relationship, it makes zero sense to be focusing on platonic friendships with women. Guys need to be framing themselves as potential partners, not rooting themselves firmly and squarely in the friendzone.

Yes, typically they there is physical attraction involved. When I was younger, I would not go out of my way to be friends with a girl if I'm not attracted to them in some way. Now I don't go out of my way to be friends at all because I don't want friendship.
