Why would a guy refer to a girl he’s seeing as his “friend”?

I know that when I talk to my dad I always just say friend and not girlfriend but that's because of who my dad is he's very interesting to say the least and then I have other friends too who would get a little bit too intrusive into it and that would just be a big hassle and so it's better to just say friend instead of girlfriend and stuff like that and in other cases maybe he's just trying to make himself look single again it depends on the situation if he's talking to people he doesn't know and none of his friends are around or family and he says that then yeah he's probably trying to make himself look single for the ladies and if it's with friends or family then chances are he's just trying to hide embarrassment that he might get from his parents or friends because those people exist and it gets really really annoying

Is he referring to her as a friend when he tells you? If so he's probably into you. And overall a guy who refer to his girlfriend as a friend means he don't want to be faithful, and keeping it open ended to sound like another person could get with him.

Someone who is committed or at least appearing to be would never say that. Because it's a give away there not.

I don’t actually know the person I also don’t know how long they have been going out as other comments suggest that you may not call someone your girlfriend until after a period of time.

He probably has an actual girlfriend and calling his female friend a girlfriend wouldn't end great for him of course. Your male friend might not even be interested in women because you know gay men exist, or he probably just not looking for a romantic relationship at the moment. He could also just simply see you as a good friend to be around but as a romantic partner he probably isn't into you or he might but he isn't sure if you are into him.

If you really are concerned about this you can try one day but do it nicely and respectfully ask him what he is looking for in a romantic partner but be prepared for anything and don't pester the dude at all otherwise you might risk losing a good friend in the process.

Because "girlfriend" would mean that they are in a relationship. That way he can think of it as a general friendship and say she´s not close to him.
