How do I stop expecting violence from verbal altercation?

Being raised in a bad area, my mind is so conditioned on just about every argument escalating into a fist fight with little to no warning. So now, living in the suburbs, I get too aggressive in arguments. It's not that I think that I'm tough. I'm just so used to any insult or argument resulting in a fight, that I expect it to occur 100% of every argument. I've started my fair share of hard feelings by being overly aggressive, expecting the same from the other person. How do I stop being so hyper vigilant?
