My boyfriend lied about having a brother?

At the beginning of our relationship (3 months ago), my boyfriend told me he has a brother. He even told me a very long story about him. Today, when I was talking about my brother, my boyfriend said he wished he had siblings too. When I told him that he previously told me he had a brother, he completely denied it. I was so confused and shocked that I couldn't say anything. Why would someone lie about such thing? What would you do if you were in my position?

Honestly, break up with him. I’m telling you right now, no one in their right mind lies about something like that…


I only say this and I am so adamant about breaking up because I experienced something like this.


I had an ex who lied from the very start, he said his parents were dead, he made a whole story about how they died in a car crash. I believed it because why wouldn’t I? Anyways, I found out in the end that his parents were indeed alive, he had step siblings, and he wasn’t from where he said he was. It’s a massive red flag, our relationship ended soon after that.


Please, do not continue a relationship with someone who likes about something like this. You will be bombarded with tons of lies like this later on down the road. Who lies about things like that? What the heck.

i think i can see why your ex would lie about that... to perhaps give him a sob story you can fall for him over. i know lots of jerks who go to those lengths.

i just have trouble seeing the same for this guy lying about a brother though. its still a major red flag

@Still-alive Yeah, he admitted he said it because he wanted me to “connect” to him since my biological parents passed away. Still, it was just unnecessary, and even then I don’t really believe a word my ex says lol.

I still don’t see the reasoning for lying about having/not having a brother… It is a major red flag because it’s still a manipulative tactic… Who knows. G

Spooky!!! That's definitely not a small thing. An ex used to play mind games claiming he'd told me that he was going to be late or, and, etc, to get out of just being honest. He would lie about the time in Times Square at midnight on New Year's Eve. That ended real quick.
I've heard it said that liars need good memories, but I completely misunderstood what that meant when I was younger. I thought it meant that if they had better memories, as in happier one, then they wouldn't be liars. Anyway, it does seem that your guy might have busted himself. It's definitely strange. I think that I'd be making sure that I wasn't leaving things at his place, anymore.

Yeah, I agree with everyone. Integrity is important in a relationship. If he did this just to get you, it’s not an excuse to lie. You can forgive him for now as he admitted his fault, but you have to be careful now. And watch out for certain things.

He's a habitual liar. They lie so much that they begin to believe their own lies.

I would tell him to let the door hit him on the rump on his way out.

Maybe he met brother as in a close freind? I don't understand what he would gain from lying about that. Dosen't make sense.
