That is something that should never be done because you see the result of this subtle stalking.

You probably did answer back initially but decided to stop replying. He has a hard time understanding why you would reply once but not on his follow-up texts. Perhaps that you gave him the impression that you were an easy prey and even though he is gay, he could still be lonely and seek companionship.

Just answer him this one time telling him that you are not interested and that he should stop texting you because you don't plan on changing your mind.

Listen to your instinct. If a elder stranger approaches you and initiates a conversation, then your reaction should be to put up a protective wall around you and not to show your emotions. Facial expressions tell a lot to adults that have some experience analyzing them.

Next time, try to keep a neutral facial expression. If you hint anything with a smile, the person already knows that you are receptive to his/her approach and then the rest is easy. A little small talk helps him to put you in confidence and then you are an easy target for further action, like asking for your phone number.
