Why do guys wait to open door for a girl?

I was an entire staircase away from the door, but when my co worker noticed me he waited for me at door to open it. Why do guys feel that they have to wait to open door for you.

For me, it's a "being a gentleman" thing. I was raised that way... hold the door open for a woman (or elder), don't call a woman after a certain time of night (it's insulting), and when you're out on the town with a woman, always offer to pick up the dinner/meal check (if you have the money to do so). I guess it's just how my father taught me to act.

It's just being polite. As hard as it is to believe, there really WAS a time when polite gestures like that were just what you did. It wasn't a gender thing and it wasn't really ever expected, like you wouldn't be expected to only hold the door for women, but it was just what you did.

are they from the south? i noticed in Philly or New York people are assholes and they will walk through a door and shut it behind them right in your face (exageration) but down south people are polite to a fault. they will hold the door while you are yards away and yell (take your time, dont run)

Being polite, for one. I think guys tend to do that more in general, not only for women. Some doors are also not the easiest to open, are can be weighty, so guys might want to save women the effort. Men also like a feminine girl who doesn't huff and puff and get angry because they're treated as a lady.

We don’t feel like we have to, per se. But men are really only valued for what we can do. So men who care about being valued do nicer things than those who care less. Especially if there’s not much else they CAN do.
