Why do guys feel like they have to wait to open door for someone?

I was at least one staircase away, and one of my co-workers ( who I don't know super well) decided to wait for me, causing me to run towards him so I don't let him wait for me for too long. Why do some guys feel like they have to wait so long and open door for you?

Its nice to be responsible and seen as caring to others, as opposed to a self-centred jerk who helps noone but himself.

However, with women acting offended by people treating them as well as men, perhaps we shouldn't be as chivalrous.

I don't wait that long. If I see someone coming I hold the door for them. I started to do that for elevators when I worked in a hospital. The area I worked was 2 floors above labor and delivery, so I needed to hold the elevator doors for pregnant women or women who were having contractions while heading to the floor.

Holding the door open for someone is human courtesy- regardless of gender, or etiquette

When I go through the door, I look and make a judgement call.

If the door will still be open by the time the person behind me gets there, I hold it.

If the door will be closed, I move on.

Everyone's a bit different in their upbringing, temperament, and motivations.

I'd just accept the kind gesture for what it is, say thanks and move on.
