Why are so many men against the idea of getting a vasectomy?

It’s reversible and you don’t have to worry about pregnancy, but a lot of men refuse, why?

Let’s compare responsibility first. Both men and women are equal in the sex part… From there his options end but hers continue. She chooses abortion or keep it. Risks? Women hold all the physical risk and a slight majority of the financial risks…

Consider the options available for both sides… women have female condom, insert, the pill, plan b, and cycle planning… abortions still available unfortunately.

Men have a condom and a vasectomy.

Comparing a vasectomy to anything but abortions really not comparable. Most men work hard labor jobs and a vasectomy takes them out of work for a week minimum. A woman can get her tubes tied and be back in work in a few days working at a computer or such. It’s harder to undue a vasectomy then tied tubes and is frequently enough the case they can’t be undone.

Women have many more options and more risk so they need to take more responsibility. Besides… if a cars playing chicken with you on the highway but your going the right direction you gonna just keep going straight because your right or you gonna turn to avoid the danger? Don’t make him wrap up and you don’t get to complain he’s not cut…

If you wrote a program that allowed access to top secret files based on certain criteria, and that program was the only way these very important files could be accessed, and those who access them have 100% say in who lives or dies in the world...
If when you ran the program it just let anyone access the files, would you just tell everyone who might want access to self regulate and take it upon themselves to grant or take access themselves since the program is shit and doesn’t grant proper access... or would you expect that the program did its job to make the right choices and be responsible for what happens to the important files since that’s literally it’s main function?

YOU are the one who makes the call if sex happens or not and YOU are the one who gets pregnant, YOU are the one who gets 100% of the parental rights... so YOU should be responsible for your shit.

( I know that is a hard concept for most females to grasp, since taking responsibility for their own choices and actions is almost impossible)

Men who get a reversal within 3 years of the vasectomy are successful in getting a woman pregnant about 75% of the time. That means 1 in 4 men are essentially infertile. After 15 years that number becomes 30%. That's not great odds. So yeah I never suggest those for people wanting kids in the future.

There are a couple of problems with your question.

About 50 million men have had a vasectomy and more than 500,000 men elect to have vasectomies every year in the U. S.

Also, you said vasectomies are reversible, but that's not exactly true. They are not considered truly reversible. Reversal of a vasectomy is often expensive, and requires a long surgery by a specialized provider, and in many cases the man is left sterile.

They're not  intended  to be reversible, at all. They can be, sometimes, but it's not guaranteed. The doctor even specifically tells you that, if you think you might change your mind in the future, don't get one. They can also fail, so even though you think you're sterile, you can still impregnate a woman. It's uncommon, but possible. Vasectomies can also have complications. They are surgeries, after all. Besides, why go through a surgery, even a relatively minor one, when condoms exist? Unless you're 100% done having children, or absolutely do not want any, ever; getting a vasectomy is idiotic. Women who think guys should "just get a vasectomy" are just as bad as men who think women should just take a pill full of hormones. Both have potential side effects and/or complications, and makes them sound incredibly selfish.

Because men love the idea of other people not having bodily autonomy, but can't deal with themselves not having that autonomy.

Also, most men just don't think about reproductive health past "unga bunga must pass down genetics". It's childish and stupid, since their genes are most likely statistically average.

Many people also have this weird fixation on "legacy" and have confused "legacy" with "babies".

Bottom line: most men (on this site only, most men irl are much more compassionate and high quality) want bodily autonomy but don't want anyone else to have it.

Vasectomies are not always reversible. Reversing a vasectomy results about twice as many failures and complications as vasectomies. I’m not sure men are resistant to getting a vasectomy. I know lots of guys who’ve had one. I know that most doctors won’t perform one on a married man unless his wife consents. I also know that a LOT of guys plan their procedures around playoffs and championships of their favorite sports! Ell oh ell! If a dude is reluctant, he’s probably just comfortable with condoms and/or pharmaceutical pregnancy control. If he thinks his wife should get tubal ligation instead, he’s probably ignorant, chicken shit, or grossly selfish. Possibly some combination of all of the above.

I don't know. Though vasectomies are only reversible if you get them clipped instead of cut. I got a vasectomy about 3 weeks before my youngest son was born. They cut and burned the lines so that it can't grow back. And it is possible for it to grow back if they only cut it. I would not trust a vasectomy that was just clipped.
The biggest misconception men have, until they actually learn what a vasectomy really does, is they think they won't cum anymore. That is what I thought when I was young.

It's an invasive surgery on a part of the body that men care about a lot.

The idea of even having surgery there probably makes a lot of men squeamish, and it would be scary if something goes wrong and it can't be reversed.

I think if there was a pill that men could take that prevents insemination, like women take birth control, many men would be down with that.

If RISUG we're made available here, that would be the way to go. 10 minute outpatient procedure. I mean it's 2 shots to the nads, but then it is 100% effective for 10 years, and can be reversed with essentially the same procedure.

But yeah, men do have options. We could use more though.

Because people really really should stop believe this ‘reversal stuff’. Vasectomy reversals are a) very expensive and b) have a low success rate that goes down with every year since the original vasectomy. Vasectomies are great for men that have a complete family, but not for men that see it as an insurance against unwanted pregnancies, it will backfire the day they’ll try the reversal. Add declining male fertility into the mix and you’ll be like lemmings running of a cliff.

Guys can kill 2 birds with one stone. Condoms give high protection against pregnancy and STDs. There is no reason for a man to do anything other than that. You want to reduce your odds of pregnancy then take birth control as well. Permanent sterilization is hardly an option for most young men. knowing I wanted children would have had one as a teen but was told by my doctor that at my age it would most likely be permanent by the time I was ready for children.

It isn’t necessarily reversible, so I wouldn’t suggest a 22-year-old get one. If he had some genetic defect he didn’t want to pass along and was certain he should never have children, maybe he should in that case.

If a man is in his 40s and doesn’t want to be paying for college in his 60s and 70s, get snipped! It’s a lot less invasive a procedure than tubal ligation.

Almost all vasectomies can be reversed. However, this doesn't guarantee success in conceiving a child. Vasectomy reversal can be attempted even if several years have passed since the original vasectomy but the longer it has been, the less likely it is that the reversal will work.

Vasectomies just aren't a very good solution to birth control for men. We can wear condoms, among other things.

Also, the procedure is reversable, but you tend to have reduced fertility. So it's not like you really recover 100%.
