He shows signs of attraction in real life, but it's to hard to maintain conversation online, why?

Hey,
So met this guy a month ago, on a similar project. There are long gazes and smiles, solitude walks, deep talks, mutual fascination, he always comes to me in a crowded place, always notices me...
But it's too difficult to maintain a real conversation online. It always very short and unfulfilling. He told me that he does not know how to ask some questions, he looks so awkward and hesitant, he compliments me all the time and then stops replying.. what could be the reason? Am I making him uncomfortable or is he fighting himself?
I can't ask this to him, we barely know each other actually. But the interest feels mutual, though I would feel awkward asking him such a personal question.

He's probably like me and just hates talking through text/online communication. It's too prone to miscommunication, so I avoid using it whenever possible.
