Why do some men try to antagonize and belittle women out of their league?

Because... MOST folks don't like the fact that so much of 'lustful attraction' is based purely upon the physical allure and that OTHERWISE... we're ALL... EQUALLY 'pink in the middle'.
There exists places in Micronesia where a willowy person CAN'T sexually give themselves way...
And...

That if that superficial attraction ISN'T mutual, the 'hottie' MAY BE
passing over the BEST sexual encounter experience of their lifetime.

'Passion' and cultural 'attraction' aren't one and the same.

More often than not, these types of people (women included!) are either highly narcissistic OR it’s someone you’ve been stringing along giving false hopes that there might be a future relationship. In either case, they feel insulted by the rejection because they are used to getting what they want- by any means. Sadly this reaction, or method, actually works for some people- and they end up dating after all that bashing. If you don’t cut that kind of behavior off from the start, it keeps happening and will not stop. You’ve effectively taught this person how to treat you, and on a deeper level you might even enjoy the banter back and forth…. Personally I cut ties with this kind of person no matter how “good” of a friend they appear to be. Negativity loves company. Surround yourself with positive people who don’t put others down.

It's a two way street. It might be your opinion that you are better than them, but they can just as easily think that they are better than you. The world doesn't revolve around you. It takes two people that both want each other to make something work.

Its all they have... its like that old thing that happens where a guy turns a girl down and he shouts abuse at her like calling her a slut or whatever. I guess deep down it comes from denial for them, that they are not good enough or as good as they feel they want to be and it manifests its self as pure anger at the person. "its not my fault its there fault" style denial you often see everywhere these days
