Mixed signals or is it clear he isn‘t interested?

I met this guy a month ago. I wasn‘t looking for anything, especially nothing serious. We started casual and started sleeping with eachother from the second date. I believe that I kept a certain distance but he started to be more intense. Over two/three weeks we spent 7 days together, sleeping over, going for dinners, going to clubs, talking into the night and I suddenly felt it was a very intense time. We both knew it would come to a break as I am going abroad for work for a few weeks and he has holidays too. He even mentioned maybe visiting me where I’m off to. So I thought I‘d ask him if we‘d like to continue when I am back and he pulled back, saying he wasn‘t thinking into the future, going day by day, relationships aren‘t on his mind right now. But that wasn’t even my question, all I wanted was to know whether we pick up where we left it before I go away. So I got really down and we met up one last time a week ago, went out had fun but I felt he was a bit distant. The next day I left him a message that I feel like he is letting me down without a clear answer and decision - he said he‘d call and he did last Monday and we had an uncomfortable conversation. He said he feels I think way too much about all these things, and that may be true, but in my opinion he started it with all the plans he suggested, nice things he said that he likes me and all that stuff. I believe he does, but I never even said any of those things, as I am careful with words. He also said he didn’t feel spending all this time together was that intense, it just happened naturally. I know you can‘t believe everything but he is actually a really nice guy, we can talk like best friends, sex is great and I feel a connection that I haven‘t felt before, but I am not saying I want a relationship. I am an honest person and look for the same in others, so why initiate spending so much time together, yet he is unable to communicate if he wants to see me again in a month or not?
