My crush and I make a lot of eye contact. I catch him looking at me sometimes. How do I know if the feeling is mutual?

I’ve had a crush on this kid at my school for almost a year now. We’ve made lots of eye contact in the hallway. I’ve caught him staring at me a few times and he’s caught me as well. I went from seeing him once every other day in the hallway to more than once every day. Towards the end of the year my friend texted his friend to try and set us up together, but she never got a response back. When the next school year started I noticed that his friends were looking at me in the hallways. I had lunch with my crush for a few days until my schedule got changed. A few times I caught him looking at me, along with when i pass him in the hallway. I have that feeling that he likes me back but i don’t know if i’m just thinking too much about it. A few of my friends say that he likes me back, along with a few adults. One of the adults said that maybe he is just shy, but I don’t think so because he’s approached girls and talked to them before. I also want to talk to him, or make a move again but I’m just scared i’m gonna get laughed at or rejected again. I was thinking about giving him a small smile in the hallway the next time I see him, but i’m also scared he won’t smile back. What should I do?
