A group of friends decided to check out this new and pretty expensive restaurant in the area. The restaurant would only divide the check so many ways, so a guy friend and I ended up on the same check.

When the bill came he paid for both our meals without even giving me a chance to see the check!

We are cool, but I wouldn't say super close, we never hang out without the group. If he made above average wages it wouldn't have shocked me as much I think. But I don't believe that to be his circumstances so it definitely took me by surprise.

I tried to get him to let me pay him back, but no dice! Finally I accepted it and thanked him for his generosity to which he simply said "you're welcome " Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than necessary but I'm notorious for missing what's in front of me, trying not to make that mistake again.

Most likely, he was being a gentleman. But you can find a way to "pay him back", maybe by giving him a birthday or Chistrmas present or doing something else for him.

There's no reason to flex that hard for someone else. I could understand if you grew up together or something, but he's almost certainly just throwing money at you to look good. It's not going to get him any brownie points.
