Typically when men cheat it's because they're horny and/or they like the thrill of being desired by a younger, hotter woman than his current partner.

Typically when women cheat it's because they're dissatisfied in their current relationship (not necessarily through any fault of her partners, but in some cases more so), and/or they're looking to "upgrade" but want to take the newest model off the lot for a test drive (or ten, or fifty) before severing old ties.

Thus, a man who cheats may have no desire to actually end his current relationship, although the immoral act of cheating itself is typically what seals the relationship's fate either way. Yet a woman who cheats usually already has the desire to end her current relationship, but through some combination of moral weakness, self-justification, and/or sheer spite, she in essence begins a new relationship whilst keeping her current partner on the hook.

Of course, the commonality shared by male and female cheaters is a total disregard to their partner's feelings and basic human dignity by the act of cheating itself; and not to mention, the secondary disregard brought on by all the lies the cheater must spin to cover up the acts of cheating.

So although men and women might tell themselves somewhat different 'stories' about "why my cheating is not only morally justified, but is damn well what's best for ME right now!", the outcome is the same: lives destroyed, moral compass abandoned, and disrespect brought on their partners and on themselves, with only themselves to blame in the final analysis of events.

Neither men nor women are naturally monogamous, hence cheating is common. It would be a strong instinct if monogamy were really beneficial to humanity as a whole. But the way nature is setup, that would be very risky for our species. It would be too risky & would possibly make us extinct at some points.

Therefore, like any self-described lifestyle decision, it is more likely to fail than it would if it were a more natural event prompted by our deepest roots.
