Did I take my guy friends words/actions the wrong way?

I have a guy friend that I've always liked. We always end up flirting when we're together. He's held my hand all night, always hugs me, gives me nicknames, brings up the day we met, etc. We went to a bar together and we're chatting and he smiled and told me "you and I are never going to be close friends. We just aren't. I have enough friends." He later told me he didn't mean to come off in a bad way and that he just didn't want to have the whole friend conversation. Then, he told me we were alone together, out on the town, and we should enjoy the moment/night together. He then asked me "what do you want?" I froze because I didn't know what he was asking. A little later when we were walking home he was teasing me and then he got quiet and said "I actually think you look cute." We both just stood there in silence for a bit. We texted all night long a few nights later and I said I enjoyed hanging out and that I heard him call me cute. Then I panicked and said I don't know why he said it and I told him I know he didn't mean it and it was probably a beer goggles comment. He replied with "I don't know where this is coming from and I don't even know what to say." Did I take it the wrong way? Was he actually showing interest and I just twisted it? I get too scared to admit my own feelings and then this happens.

He's saying he doesn't like you. He doesn't want to be your friend. He complimented you, so you don't feel bad. Block him and let him be with his friends. He doesn't want to be your friend.

We've literally had an entire conversation about being friends and I told him we don't have to be. Our families are close and I said just because they're close doesn't mean we have to be. I reminded him of this conversation and he said he didn't mean to come off that way and that he does want to be friends. He said he doesn't just feel that way because of the families, and that he'd tell me if he didn't want to be. That's why I'm confused why he wanted to take me out on the town and made that comment.

What do you mean? I'd gladly take any input on this because I'm genuinely confused. See above comment. We had an entire conversation regarding being friends prior to this. I said we didn't have to be close just because our families are and he said that's not what he wants. He wants to be friends and he doesn't just feel that way because of family and he'd tell me if he didn't want to be. I reminded him of this after he made the friend comment and said I'm not sure why he'd say that when I already said we don't have to be friends and to just tell me, and that's when he said he didn't mean to come off that way. He said he just didn't want to have the friend conversation. I don't get what he wants, or why he'd ask what I want and hold my hand and tell me he thinks I'm cute and hug me all the time, etc. He's always remembering things about me, and sometimes he remembers things I don't remember telling him. And he always brings you the day we met and asks if I remember it. I'm beyond confused.
