Why do guys stand behind you? Or sit behind you?

I had this guy that was in all my classes and he would stand behind me or just stay somewhat near me when i was sad in lesson and I don't understand why. Can anyone answer why guys do this?
He would also stare at me in lesson a lot or make eye contact with me like a lot when I walk past, walk in the classroom etc.
Just to note I've never really talked to thus guy much other than when we did group work together he helped me talk during presentation because of my anxiety I couldn't talk in front of the class
