Why are guys so hot and cold?

I met a guy on a dating app and we seemed to hit it off. We live far apart (few hours) so it was just texting for a while. We talked almost everyday about everything and nothing at the same time. We finally met in person, had sex and spent the night together. Then everything changed its like the friendship part evaporated. He still wants to have sex but puts minimal if any effort into the friendship part of things. Wtf happened? I feel like the rug was pulled out from under me.

I'm cool with friends with benefits. We live far so a girlfriend/boyfriend relationship is not ideal and honestly unrealistic and I'mnot really looking for that right now. However, I can't have sex with a guy I have no connection or communication with outside the physical. There has to be more for me, some kind of a connection.

I stopped talking to him a few weeks ago. I didn't know how to communicate what I was feeling so I just dipped. I miss him though, at least who he was before we had sex. Is it worth explaining to him? Why do guys do the hot and cold thing?
