What makes a guy decide they want something serious with a woman?

I (34) met a guy (31) who at first said he only wanted friends. But then we started talking and over time he started flirting with me and stuff. Then 2 weeks in we made plans to go out and I asked if we were going as friends, and he said "I thought it was a date?".

So we went out and he kissed me, and then he asked what I thought of him. And if I wanted to be friends, friends with benefits, have a relationship, etc. He said that wanted to be my boyfriend. I had to think about it for bit and I agreed to be his girlfriend. We only kissed and messed around a little. No sex yet, and he hasn't tried to pressure me for sex either.

I'm going to his family's house tomorrow to dance and hang out. We are both latino, so that part is normal culturally. But I just think it's interesting that he started out saying he only wanted friends, and suddenly he said he wanted something serious with me. This is the first time it's happened this way, so I'd like to get some guys opinions on this.

I would assume that at first he wasn´t sure about his feelings. He liked you but wasn´t sure if he could built something deeper with you. I think he liked what you said and the level of communication that you had while talking longer.

Speaking from own experience it´s a positive and important if a woman gives me the feeling she understands me and shares some interests or views of the world. Because an important thing many guys look for in a woman is a receptive character. I mean with that a character trait where she shares a conversation with me while making me feel welcomed, not judged and acknowledged.

Maybe you had such a conversation with him without realising it.

To be perfectly honest, friends to relationship is the best way for romance and should be normalized as the proper way to get into a relationship, instead of hookup relationships. Friends to relationship is honestly how it used to be. You got to know someone, found them attractive, ask them out to get to know them better, if things go well, you kissed as asked if you want it official. It was a healthy way to get into a relationship instead of getting into a relationship with someone you barely knew that you know is great at sex. It is tough to put a finger on exactly what makes a woman worth sticking around for, but I can tell you that a big thing that a lot of men look for is that the idea of doing boring/mundane stuff with the woman is exciting

There's no set rule.

Some guys aren't open to a committed relationship at all, with anyone. It could be that their life doesn't leave room for one, or they can't afford it, or they are moving away soon, or whatever. Or they may have resolved not to commit to anyone.

Other guys are open to a relationship if they can find a suitable girl, but are willing to be in a casual relationship when they are single and haven't found a girl worth committing to. It sounds like that's where he was.

Anyway, it seems like he is happy with you so far - he may have been skeptical at first but you seem to have won him over.

I don’t think there’s one thing. But…there’s just a feeling about someone that you can’t stop thinking about.
If he wants you and is being respectful to your boundaries. I would take that as a sign of respect and him just trying to be a gentleman.

The simplest way of saying it is that we get serious when we are comfortable being ourselves around you AND we have physical attraction for you. He might have been trying to test the waters and see if you wanted to get serious too. Women can sometimes be hard to read and perhaps he was trying to get closer without being too pushy. For myself, I try and think of what I would like in a serious relationship and pursue women who seem to hold some of those traits.
