Why would he confess his crush on me anonymously? Why can't he just be straight up?

There is this new app that us high schoolers have been using called gas app where you can send anonymous messages from people you have added. My crush had confessed to me anonymously on there and I know it was him because he is the only guy I have added on there and the app marks if the message is from a guy or if its a girl. Why can't he just tell me he likes me why do it anonymously?

The way the app works is that you can only get messages from people you have added as a friend. He is the only guy i have added on there and the message was marked that it came from a boy.
